The town was built on the place called the Rusidava Roman
Camp as well as around it.
     Dragasani is first attested documentarily in June 7th,1755.
In Dragasani, one can visit The Memorial House of Gib
Mihaescu and The Museum of Gib Mihaescu ; he was one of
the most important Romanian writers ;
     Horezu town – situated in the west part of the district, 45
km far from Rm. Valcea – is famous for its pottery artists.
     It is documentarily attested in a letter of Vlad Calugaru on
5. Sptember, 1487.
     In Horezu town, one can visit the following places:
      - The Foundation of Constantin Brancoveanu ; the Horezu
Monastery – historical and religious monument, 1693 ;
      - the Maldaresti Complex of Museums , consisting of
fortified towers which display art collections and objects
manufactured in Horezu ;
      - Calimanesti –Caciulata resorts are located 18 km north
from Rm. Valcea on the Olt river valley. The two resorts are
famous for their bathing and medicinal springs ; they can be
visited all over the year.
The Cozia Monastery, Foundation of Mircea cel Batran (1387


         – 1388), represents a special attraction for all visitors in the area.
In the neighbourhood there is the Arutela Roman Camp.
The Govora resort is also famous being situated 20 km SW from Rm. Valcea in a charming area with
hills and lanes covered with beech-trees (fagus), oak-trees and fir-trees.
        An other attraction for the visitors is representsed by the monasteries in the nearby: “Govora”
(first printing press), “Dintr-un lemn”, “Surpatele”.
        Ocnele Mari and Ocnita are towns with old traditions even from the time of the Dacian-Roman
population ; they are remarkable for the abundance of salt in the area.
        The archeological researches in that part certify the fact that in the area of Ocnita there is an
important military, political, religious and economical centre called the “Dacian Buridava” which is
mentioned by Ptolemy in the 2nd century A.C.
        From Gura Lotrului , crossed by DN7 (E81) along a distance of aprox. 40 km. towards east,
there is the narrow pass of the Lotru river with beautiful landscapes.
        The Voineasa mountain resort is located at the other end of the narrow pass. This resort and
its surroundings give full satisfaction to the people who love mountains and the beauties of nature
as well.
         From Voineasa one can reach the Vidra resort which is situated on the bank of the Vidra
Accumulation Lake. Going on one can see along Obarsia Lotrului - touristic stop, then, crossing the
mountains people can reach Petrosani towards west (Valea Jiului) and Sebes in Transylvania
towards north.
         The access to the mountain resorts and to the mentioned above towns can be done on
mountain passes as well as by car and/or by touring buses, the roads being surfaced with asphalt,
therefore, they are in good conditions.
         In Valcea District one can visit other religious, historical, ethno-folklorical touristic areas, each
of these having a specific and glorious past. All these places keep their authenticity and naturalness.
